It made me laugh. A rueful, hilarious, self-deprecating laugh. I like to wander on dry land imagining swimming. I read dry texts and imagine I am understanding the nature of something.

So rarely do I just jump in. But I’ve started. I’ve set myself up for opportunities. Shown up in the face of fear. I’ve gurbled and flailed around in deeper waters than I’ve ever known or experienced before and I’ve learned to swim in all kinds of new ways.

I’m going to swim this experience. I’m in the water and I’m showing my vulnerability and I’m ready for it. It doesn’t happen until it’s ready to happen. I couldn’t be here without having been well-loved in the past. I couldn’t be here without building muscles toward this kind of reaching. I couldn’t be here without a lot of tears and soul-ache. At some point I chose to move towards joy, mystery and amazement. Miracles. Intricate and small or monumentally large miracles.

So I am writing. I am here. I am experimenting with writing the world as I experience it. Imperfectly and mostly-blind but I’m hoping those muscles that are weak in the face of this task become stronger, wider, more supple, more knowledgeable.

I’m flying from the edge of the cliff, headed for water.

“If you want to learn to swim jump into the water.
