Brief notes: On watching myself dance

  • Knees are bendy. That bothers me for some reason. I don’t know why I think they shouldn’t be. Except. Oh, now I recall these movements of perfection performed by exceptional ballerinas and it seems that all movement is away from bendy. Movement as a goal is straight lines. Lithe, effortless, stretching out of limbs and ligaments–point THAT WAY. My dancing, my movement, is not that. Knees are bendy. They make boxes and check marks and less-than and greater-than signs.
  • How do I make that space in my low back more aware, active, engaged? The space where the glutes meet the sacrum meet the lumbar vertebrae. Is that even possible? How can I dance to make that space alive?
  • On video I can look large, long, extracted? Up on tiptoes, arms up–that has power. My tendency is toward the crunched up. The bent knees and arms and a confusion of limbs, but then sometimes I extend it all out and it looks so powerful.
  • The hands and the feet and the face–flesh that is visible, not hidden by clothing when they connect something happens. Mirror neurons firing away at the idea of touch–skin touching skin.
