Earth is a Solar Powered Juke Box–Gordon Hempton
Acoustic ecologist, it’s not a job you ever heard about at career fairs in high school. Thankfully the world is full of people willing to create work outside the career fair list and in doing so invite us to view life differently. “The Earth is a solar powered juke box.” Only someone deeply focused on the acoustic expereince on our planet would come up with that startling and wonderful phrase.
Even more wonderful are the sounds Gordon Hempton has collected. As a visual person I’m always relieved when I find a view without wires. The easiest places for that are large bodies of water, great lakes and oceans for example. Hempton searches for vistas of sound untouched by manmade noises. He’s also on a quest to save some of those sonic vistas.
